Join us for this extra workshop being held during the first half of the day at the KAC Annual Conference.  This workshop is a multimedia presentation with interactive exercises for the participants and lots of real life stories about how to frame messaging. Topics included will be ethics, public relations, and lobbying the Legislature and elected officials. You will work on writing succinct talking points and presenting them effectively.

This workshop can be applied toward requirements for the Foundations in County Government leadership certificate program. The registration fee includes lunch, breaks and materials.  You must pre-register for this workshop to assure catering is accurate.  Space is limited.

MIKE TAYLOR is Public Relations Director for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas.  His duties include media relations, crisis communications, lobbying the Kansas Legislature and Congress on behalf of the Unified Government. He also advises the County Administrator, Mayor, Commission and Department Directors on community issues. Taylor served a similar role for the City of Wichita from 1995 to 2003.

Since arriving in Wyandotte County in October 2003, Taylor has successfully engineered passage of a 1/4-cent sales tax to fund a new Emergency Medical Service; assisted the Governor and Legislature in working out complications with STAR Bonds and Streamlined Sales Tax; and designed and implemented a comprehensive communications plan to better connect citizens with their local government.

Taylor spent 15 years at KAKE-TV, the ABC News affiliate in Wichita. He was Senior Reporter, covering government and politics. Prior to that he worked for KWCH-TV, KFH Radio and NPR. He has reported for ABC News as well, covering the Oklahoma City bombing, the Andover tornado and the visit of Boris Yeltsin to Kansas.

Taylor has dealt with crisis communications from both sides of the camera, as a reporter asking the questions and as an official giving the answers. Mike has a degree in Journalism from Wichita State University and has completed advanced coursework at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St Petersburg, Florida.

Mike is also owner of Strategy Consultants. Through Strategy Consultants, Mike trains dozens of government officials and elected leaders in dealing with the media; gives practical, effective political advice; writes concise, effective speeches; and produces video presentations which deliver messages in moving and memorable ways.
